What Are Satellite Challenges?

Satellite Challenges are interactive, space-themed virtual experiences designed to bring real world STEM learning and space exploration into classrooms — whether students are together in person, learning remotely, or in a hybrid setting. They are delivered live by experienced Challenger Learning Center Flight Directors using video conference technology, so students can actively participate in mission-style simulations right from where they are.

During a Satellite Challenge, students take on roles just like real scientists and engineers. They are placed into teams, solve urgent problems, conduct research, and make decisions that affect the outcome of the mission. This is all done while practicing critical 21st-century skills such as teamwork, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

These experiences are built around Earth and space science themes, and they also weave in key physical science concepts. Each challenge typically runs 60–90 minutes and can be paired with educator guided, pre- and post-mission activities to deepen learning and classroom connections.
