Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)

  • Challenger Maine 30 Venture Way Bangor, ME, 04401 United States (map)

Imagine the excitement of your students speaking live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station!

The Challenger Learning Center of Maine is excited to host a free, in-person ARISS Proposal Training Workshop designed to help educators apply to the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. ARISS supported by NASA and international space partners gives students the extraordinary opportunity to speak live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) using amateur radio technology.

This hands-on workshop, led by NASA ARISS, will guide educators through the process of writing a strong, competitive proposal while building confidence in bringing authentic space science experiences into the classroom. Participants will receive expert insights from experienced ARISS contributors, take part in engaging STEM activities, and tour Challenger’s newly upgraded simulators and learning spaces.

Adding to the excitement, Maine astronaut Dr. Jessica Meir is scheduled to travel to the ISS sometime after February 15, 2026, and she may be the astronaut students speak with during a successful ARISS contact. Winning schools also receive the necessary radio equipment to conduct the live downlink with the ISS, removing barriers and expanding access to this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Lunch will be provided, making it easy for educators to focus on learning, collaboration, and inspiration throughout the day.

If you’re an educator looking to ignite curiosity, connect students directly with space exploration, and bring the ISS into your classroom, this ARISS Proposal Training Workshop is your launch point. Learn more about the ARISS program at ARISS.org, and join us at the Challenger Learning Center of Maine as we help Maine students reach for the stars.

While participation in the workshop does not guarantee that your proposal will be accepted, we are confident
that the strategies and insights shared will be of great value in strengthening your submission.

What You’ll Gain:

  • A clear understanding of the ARISS program and its educational impact.

  • Step-by-step guidance on writing a successful ARISS proposal (participants will complete a significant amount of the application during the session).
